Moose and black bear are the primary big-game targets, with white-tailed deer using island edges and mainland cuts. Waterfowl hunting on Lake of the Woods and adjoining marshes is a regional specialty under federal migratory-bird regulations. Ruffed grouse work well on regenerating forestry blocks inland from the lake. Access planning must account for water. Public boat launches in Kenora, Keewatin, and along Highway 17 toward Sioux Narrows put hunters onto Crown islands and remote shoreline that have no road access. Inland, forestry roads toward English River country and east toward Vermilion Bay / Dryden open truck hunts. Fall storms on Lake of the Woods are serious — carry marine safety gear and watch wind forecasts before crossing open water with a hunting load. Sioux Narrows and Nestor Falls hunters often combine mainland truck loops with short boat hops to Crown islands that never see a road. Minaki-bound trips along the Winnipeg River mix cottage patents with genuine general-use parcels — CLUPA zoom level matters more here than in the Clay Belt. Eagle Lake’s eastern approaches toward Dryden offer a truck-first alternative when Lake of the Woods whitecaps cancel boat plans. Waterfowl hunters should pre-mark federal sanctuary and municipal no-hunting shoreline before opening day. Ice conditions on the big lake vary bay-to-bay in early winter; local knowledge beats a provincial freeze-up headline.
