Renfrew sits on the Bonnechere River near Highway 17 and Highway 60, at the Ottawa Valley edge of Renfrew County’s farm–forest mosaic. Calabogie, the Madawaska River, Upper Madawaska country, Foymount’s highland roads, and Eganville approaches open the Crown and multi-use parcels that valley hunters actually use. This is not continuous boreal Crown — it is pieced hunting among patent farms, cottage lakes, and general-use Crown blocks climbing toward the Algonquin highlands. WMUs 48, 58, 59, and 63A cover the Renfrew radius. The town sits in WMU 59 with adjoining units toward Pembroke, Bancroft Highlands, and southern Ottawa Valley. CLUPA literacy matters more here than in Kapuskasing: a green hillside beside a county road is often private. White-tailed deer and wild turkey are the primary seasons. Black bear use highland berry ridges toward Calabogie and Foymount. Moose tags are a secondary, unit-specific possibility closer to Algonquin-influenced units. Ruffed grouse are solid along regenerating cuts and abandoned bush lots. Ottawa River and Bonnechere wetlands offer waterfowl when federal seasons align. Access is county-road driven: Highway 17 for the valley floor, Highway 60 west toward Barry’s Bay / Algonquin approaches, and Madawaska / Calabogie road systems into the highlands. Foymount roads gain elevation quickly and can ice early. Park legally — farm lane pull-offs are not public access. Renfrew and Arnprior services cover staging for day hunts across the county. Arnprior and Douglas hunters working the valley floor will spend more time on permission-based private land than on Crown; the public-land payoff climbs toward Calabogie and Foymount. Barry’s Bay approaches on Highway 60 open highland units that feel closer to Bancroft than to Ottawa farmland. Madawaska River canoe pull-offs are not automatic hunting access — check the polygon behind the parking lot. Early-season turkey and late-season deer both suffer from weekend ATV and leaf-peeping traffic; weekday sits win. Keep CFB Petawawa and other federal parcels off your route card even when a gravel road seems to point conveniently north-west. Eganville and Douglas make practical secondary staging when Renfrew lodging is full during deer opener. Calabogie’s recreation traffic is heavy on weekends; hunt the next ridge inland or come Tuesday. Upper Madawaska crown pockets still require CLUPA confirmation among hunt camps. Valley fog and black ice on Foymount grades are November constants — leave extra drive time rather than rushing a dawn sit.
